A New Narrative: The Power of Focusing on Ability

A New Narrative: The Power of Focusing on Ability
A new podcast, "Enable: The Disability Podcast," is working to change the conversation around disability. Co-hosts Geoff "DeafGeoff" Herbert and Kurt Hower, who both live with disabilities, are sharing their own stories and those of others to highlight a powerful message: focus on what you can do, not what you can't.
Geoff, who was born with profound hearing loss, has built a career as a reporter and a DJ. He uses assistive technology and skills like lipreading to navigate the world. Kurt has ankylosing spondylitis, a rare disease that causes arthritis of the spine, and has excelled as a leader in the media industry. They both believe that while they may have a deficit in one area, they have a lot to offer in others. "Disability is not a dirty word," Herbert states, reminding us that people should be valued for what they bring to the table.
The podcast aims to highlight resources and inspire others to shift their perspective. It's a reminder that everyone has a unique set of abilities, and embracing those strengths is what truly empowers people. The focus is on moving beyond a mindset of limitations to one of possibility and contribution.
