What is PMDD? Study finds link between serious condition and women with ADHD

A new UK-based survey of 715 women aged 18–34 reveals that those with ADHD are approximately three times more likely to meet criteria for Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) compared to those without ADHD—about 31% of women with a clinical ADHD diagnosis and 41% of those with high ADHD symptoms (even without formal diagnosis) showed provisional PMDD, versus only 9% in the non‑ADHD group uk.news.yahoo.com+8the-independent.com+8uk.news.yahoo.com+8. The study also found that co‑occurring anxiety or depression further increased PMDD risk. PMDD is a severe mood disorder that causes extreme emotional symptoms—such as irritability, depression, anxiety, and overwhelming fatigue—during the days before menstruation and can seriously disrupt daily life; it may also heighten the risk of suicidal ideation qmul.ac.uk. The findings highlight the need for better awareness and screening for PMDD among women with ADHD, including those without a formal diagnosis, and point to broader gaps in understanding how hormonal changes impact mental health in adult women with ADHD the-independent.comcontemporaryobgyn.net.
