The Pharmaceutical Journal: Number of adults prescribed ADHD medication rises by a quarter

Recent NHS data reveals that the number of adults prescribed ADHD medication in England has risen by 24% in the past year, with around 190,000 adults receiving prescriptions in 2024/25. Children also saw a 9.5% increase, with approximately 135,000 receiving ADHD medication. Over the past decade, overall prescriptions have more than tripled, growing from 107,000 in 2015/16 to over 326,000 in 2024/25. There has also been a notable shift in gender balance, with women now accounting for 38% of prescriptions compared to just 24% a decade ago, reflecting better recognition of ADHD in females. Experts suggest that the COVID-19 pandemic, the rise of telemedicine, and increased awareness have contributed to the surge, particularly among adults. ADHD UK’s Henry Shelford welcomed the growing diagnoses as a positive step in helping people get the support they need, while also emphasizing that many individuals remain undiagnosed and that systemic improvements are still necessary.
