Working with East Midlands Railway to improve travel for autistic people

The National Autistic Society has partnered with East Midlands Railway (EMR) to enhance accessibility and inclusivity for autistic passengers. EMR staff participated in the charity’s “Autism Champions” training programme—part of a Department for Transport–funded initiative—to build autism awareness across the company. As a result, EMR earned the Autism Friendly Award for its Skegness–Nottingham line. Real customer experiences, such as a train guard checking in on an overwhelmed passenger and offering personal reassurance, illustrate the positive impact of these efforts. The collaboration reflects how simple acts and increased understanding can significantly improve rail travel for autistic individuals and their families.
