DISABILITY PAY GAP GROWS

The widening gap between earnings for disabled and non-disabled workers reveals that our economy is trapping many in poverty. Latest figures show that in the year to Spring 2024, the gap grew to 17.2%. On average that's £2.35 per hour, or £4,300 a year for a full time worker.

The Labour government's commitment to mandatory disability pay gap reporting is a welcome step (here's our social video explainer). And the Employment Rights Bill's measures to tackle insecure employment will help. This disproportionately affects disabled workers, who are a third more likely to be on a zero-hours contract. And disabled BAME women are three time more likely to be on zero-hours than white men.

We need an economy that allows disabled people to thrive, not one that traps them in poverty."
