    I appreciated hearing the reflection of Jim Abbot in the documentary about this moment when he finally made the team- and how he was standing on the field talking with his teammates after a game- feeling like he was finally a part of something- when a manager tapped his shoulder and asked if Jim could come and talk to a mom and her little boy who had a limb difference. He said that he didn't want to go- but was always glad that he did. It reminds me of these high level themes of belonging and acceptance and reminders of being different- and how even our high level celebrities and athletes - we are are looking to as role models - may also struggle with acceptance and belonging. I wonder if there are better ways to help support them! Jim Abbot is SUCH a kind and welcoming human, I am so thankful for his joy and kindness in the limb different community!!

    I remember watching him as a kid. I'm thinking this athlete is representing me, even though he's on a team that I despise. What a cool thought it was, and it drew me further into my love of baseball, which has shown my life and some of my career choices. This was back when I had no concept of the Paralympics. Working in and around sports for so long, my friends and I have a saying, Athletes are people too, so when we see them struggling on the field, it's OK to criticize their performance up to a certain level, but also separating them from the person, whom we probably know nothing about and know nothing of their human struggle.
